Dunning Found Guilty in Wallowa County Ranch Violence
Enterprise, OR February 4, 2009 10:26 a.m.
The only person charged in an eastern Oregon gun fight from two years ago was found guilty Tuesday. The family feud over cattle ownership left two men dead on a Wallowa County ranch.
The jury found Donna Dunning guilty of assaulting and attempting to kill her relative, Travis Beach. He is the only other survivor of the fight. He was not charged for shooting and killing Dunning's boyfriend, Shane Huntsman.
Prosecutors told jurors that Dunning sided with Huntsman in killing Dennis Beach, and attempting to kill Dennis' son, Travis, with a rock. Defense attorneys claimed Dunning acted to defend herself and her boyfriend.
But Wallowa County District Attorney, Mona Williams told jurors that Dunning and Huntsman couldn't claim that defense - because they started the fight.
Mona Williams: "Shane Huntsman could not have defended himself, because his actions were unlawful. He was the threat, he was the aggressor. Self-defense of Shane Huntsman doesn't fly."
Dunning's sentencing has not been scheduled yet.
