Deficit Forces Portland Unitarian Church To Close For A Month
Portland, OR February 4, 2009 8:53 a.m.
You’ve heard about businesses and non-profit organizations closing their doors in the slumping economy. But you might be surprised to hear about a mainstream church shutting down.
That’s happening – at least temporarily – at the First Unitarian Church in Portland - the largest Unitarian Church in the country in terms of attendance.
It’s facing a deficit of $185,000 in the next fiscal year.
Senior Pastor Doctor Marilyn Sewell says that has forced the church to take the dramatic step of closing next July.
