Family Feud, Cattle-Rustling Case Goes to Jury
Enterprise, OR February 2, 2009 5 p.m.
The jury is deliberating the fate of a woman on trial for alleged involvement in a gunfight in eastern Oregon that killed two men, two years ago. Rob Manning reports from Wallowa County.
One of the bloodiest events in recent eastern Oregon history involved a family feud that flared over accusations of cattle rustling.
When Dennis and Travis Beach squared off against Shane Huntsman and Donna Dunning near the tiny town of Flora - Hunstman shot Dennis Beach off his horse. Then, Beach’s son, Travis, shot Huntsman, after wrestling away the rifle.
District Attorney, Mona Williams, told jurors that Donna Dunning should be punished for helping Huntsman try to kill Travis Beach with a rock.
Mona Williams: “Kill him! Kill him! Travis Beach said that he heard that from Donna Dunning.”
Travis Beach was not charged for killing Huntsman. Dunning's attorney, Wes Williams, says his client’s hands are clean - literally.
Wes Williams: “Most importantly, we know that Donna Dunning never wielded the rock because there’s no blood on her hands.”
Jurors are considering two charges against Dunning: assault and attempted murder.
