Oregon Has Stake In Amtrak Debate

Springfield Democrat Peter Defazio and members of a Congressional transportation subcommittee listened to testimony Wednesday about the future of railroads in this country.
Central Oregon correspondent Ethan Lindsey reports on Oregon’s part of that future.
The long-term hopes for passenger rail seem much brighter under the new Obama administration.
Just last week, new Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood promised to fight for expanded passenger rail service.
Oregon is one of several states that could benefit from increased Amtrak funding.
Last year, Congress ordered Amtrak to study the viability of reopening the “Pioneer Route” through eastern Oregon.

The pioneer train shut down in 1997 because not enough people rode it.
Fred Warner is the chair of the Baker County Commission.
Fred Warner: “If it was easy, people would use it now. $4-a-gallon gas would make it really, a viable option.”
Amtrak will publish its feasibility study later this year.
