Boeing Announces More Layoffs After $56 Million Quarterly Loss
Seattle, WA January 28, 2009 12:16 p.m.
Boeing is increasing its layoffs. The company now says it will cut 10,000 jobs, or about 6 percent of its work force.
The new number includes the 4,500 job cuts announced earlier this month for the commercial airplanes division.
CEO Jim McNerney spoke in a conference call Wednesday after the company reported a $56 million quarterly loss. He says the additional layoffs will likely be in more overhead than in production positions, but did not specify exactly where they will fall.
IDS is Boeing's Integrated Defense Systems, which McNerney says is expecting lower revenue as governments cut spending.
Boeing has a backlog of 3700 orders but the company is starting to see airlines delay or cancel.
McNerney says it will take one order for 15 Boeing 787s off the books this week. Most Boeing employees are in the Puget Sound area, but about 1500 work in Gresham.
