Three Oregon Cities Welcome New Mayors
Portland, OR January 5, 2009 8:39 a.m.
Three of Oregon’s largest cities will swear in new mayors starting Monday. Rob Manning has more.
For Portland, Beaverton, and Hillsboro, the new year means out with the old mayors and in with the new.
When Tom Potter decided not to run for re-election as Portland mayor, it opened the door for city commissioner Sam Adams.
The City Hall insider beat businessman Sho Dozono last May. Unlike Potter, Adams has a penchant for big projects, and he’s already reorganized the city’s police, planning and sustainable development bureaus.
Rob Drake lost his bid for a fifth term as Beaverton mayor last spring. After Drake publicly battled with the city’s largest employer, Nike, the apparel company backed city councillor Denny Doyle.
Like Sam Adams, Denny Doyle gets sworn in Monday.
Tom Hughes was limited to two terms as Hillsboro mayor, but in that time, he helped solidify the city’s image as a high-tech hub.
Former Hillsboro city councilor, Jerry Willey, ran unopposed and won. Willey takes his oath of office as mayor at the year’s first city council meeting, Tuesday night.
