Oregon Nursery Industry Hit Hard By Winter Storms
Portland, OR December 30, 2008 10:20 a.m.
As nursery workers get out into the fields of the Willamette Valley they’re seeing millions of dollars worth of damage to greenhouses and plants -- caused by the recent storms. Kristian Foden-Vencil reports.
The sheer weight of snow and ice that built up on greenhouses, cracked and broke glass panes and ripped down plastic roofs.
At one seedling operation in Molalla, 72 out of 84 greenhouses were crushed.
Elizabeth Peters of the Oregon Association of Nurseries says they’re going to be looking for help.
Elizabeth Peters: “What we’re wanting to do is just to give an understanding of the damage to the Oregon Department of Agriculture, which is working closely with us on this, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture and of course the congressional delegation. We just need to let them know.”
The Nurseries Association is asking all its members to complete an online survey about damage at their businesses, in order to get a full understanding of the damage.
