Snow Closes Roads Throughout Western Oregon
Portland, OR December 22, 2008 9:43 a.m.
The intense snow and freezing rain storms over the weekend have made it a lot harder for anyone trying to leave home, this morning. Rob Manning has more.
Your chances of getting where you want to go might be the worst if you’re trying to fly. Late Sunday, PDX was reporting at least twenty times as many flight cancellations as flights leaving or arriving as scheduled.
If you’re taking the train, Amtrak’s north-south line isn’t running from Eugene to Portland.
It’s not a whole lot better if you’re hoping to drive. Portland transportation officials closed at least seven streets since Friday.
They say they’re trying to clear major streets as quickly as possible, but still, they asked people to avoid driving, and use transit.
If you do drive, the Oregon Department of Transportation says state highways like Powell Boulevard and Macadam Avenue require chains. An ODOT spokesman emphasized that traction tires are not sufficient.
A closure of I-84 expanded yesterday, stretching from Gresham to Hood River.
I-84 was also closed between La Grande and Baker City.
Highways 6 and 26 closed starting in western Washington County.
And Highways 18 and 22 between the valley and the coast were also closed overnight.
Meteorologists indicate the snow ought to start melting by Christmas.
