Icy Streets Continue To Plague Portland
Portland, OR December 15, 2008 9:40 p.m.
Portland road crews are continuing to work round-the-clock shifts to keep icy roads clear. But as Rob Manning reports, officials remain worried about low temperatures, and the possibility of a second storm this week.
Transportation officials gave credit for a relatively easy Monday commute to their crews, as well as local residents - many of whom stayed at home, or rode transit, instead of driving.
Early Monday morning, the Oregon Department of Transportation canceled chain requirements for most surface streets. But ODOT regional manager, Karla Keller doesn't want anyone to put the chains back in the garage.
Karla Keller: “We ask that people continue to carry your chains. It’s cold out here, but please do, if you get a chance, practice putting your chains on. And also, feel comfortable with your chains, because as the new storms come in, chances are we’re going to have to go back to some chain requirements in the Portland Metro area.”
Road crews are focusing on major arteries. Tri-Met says its buses are running as much as a half-hour late, since chained-up buses can only go 25 miles an hour.
