City Opens Shelter For People With Pets
Portland, OR December 15, 2008 1:06 p.m.
Portland leaders are worried that an extended cold spell could lead to health problems among people with inadequate shelter.
The city has tried to make shelters as open as possible. For instance, Portland mayor-elect Sam Adams said that pet owners don't have to leave their dogs and cats out in the cold.
Sam Adams: “We’ve opened extra warming facilities in the city for both families and individuals. And people not wanting to leave a dangerous situation sometimes because they have pets - I want people to know that the additional facilities also allow for pets.”
Adams also asked people to check in on their neighbors over the course of the week.
Transportation officials say they’re no longer requiring chains on most major roads in the region. But they say you should keep them in the car, because conditions could change quickly, especially with snow predicted again later this week.
