Oregon Delegation Getting The Most Out Of Lame Duck Session
Portland, OR December 8, 2008 9:49 a.m.
At least one week of work remains for the 110th Congress. As April Baer reports, the lame duck session may prove challenging for Oregon's representatives.
Fiscal issues continue to dominate the Congressional agenda, with a proposed bailout for American automakers on the table.
Oregon reps were queasy about how the banking industry bailout was handled--three held their noses and approved it anyway.
Some have indicated that before they'd agree to extend a hand to the auto industry, they'd like provisions added to help consumers.
It appears additional action on the banking bailout won't happen until January, when the new Congress--and the new President--have been sworn in.
There may be opportunities for the Oregon delegation to secure funding for local infrastructure projects, as part of a $60 billion economic stimulus bill.
And this week promises to be a poignant one for outgoing Congresswoman Darlene Hooley. She's bringing twelve years of Congressional service to a close.
Hooley's chief of staff says the Democrat actually made many of her goodbyes already, before it was clear Congress would come back for a lame duck session.
