Two Men Missing In Tillamook Bay After Fishing Boat Capsizes
Portland, OR November 28, 2008 3:09 p.m.
Still no sign of two men who were lost when their fishing boat capsized in Tillamook Bay Friday morning. A third man survived the accident. Coast Guard officials say the survivor was wearing a life jacket, and managed to swim to shore. Identities of the three men have not yet been released.
The 40-foot vessel was a commercial crab fishing boat, the Network, whose crew had apparently planned to put out their crab pots today. However, Coast Guard Petty Officer Sean Eggert couldn't say whether the crew was coming or going when they ran into trouble.
Eggert: "We have pollution and casualty investigators heading to Tillamook, not only to look into the case with the Network, but with a reported sheen. There were an estimated four-hundred gallons of diesel fuel onboard the Network."
Two small boats and a helicopter are still scanning the water for the two missing crewmen. Eggert couldn't speculate about how long a person might stay alive in the water under today's conditions.
Chances of survival can be influenced by water temperature, and time spent in the water, as well as body size, and whether a victim was wearing a life jacket.
The bar at Tillamook Bay is well-known as a dangerous spot. It was the site of a 2003 wreck involving Taki Tooo, which took eleven lives.
