Video Leads To New Investigation In Chasse Case
Portland, OR November 13, 2008 4:04 p.m.
A Multnomah County prosecutor will work with Portland police to determine whether an officer lied during the investigation of the death of James Chasse.
Chasse, who suffered from schizophrenia, died during an arrest by three officers on September 17th, 2006.
In a video from that day, Officer Christopher Humphreys appears to tell a sheriff's deputy that -- "we tackled him.” But three days later, Humphreys told the official investigation that he pushed Chasse then stumbled over him, landing on the sidewalk.
Chasse suffered 26 broken bones.
Norm Frink is Multnomah County’s chief deputy DA.
Norm Frink: “There’s been an allegation that there was untruthfulness during the course of the criminal investigation that ended in the grand jury decision. We’re going to look into that and make a determination one way or the other.”
Portland Police Chief, Rosie Sizer, has asked internal affairs investigators to examine the video and review the transcripts from the criminal investigation to check for inconsistencies.
