Boeing, Union Reach Tentative Agreement
Gresham, OR October 28, 2008 2:33 p.m.
A tentative agreement between Boeing and its machinists’ union affects Oregon as well as Washington and Kansas. As Kristian Foden-Vencil reports, union members will vote Saturday whether to ratify the deal.
Details of the deal emerged slowly, but workers will get a 15 percent increase in pay over four years.
They also won bigger pension benefits and better job security – one of the thorniest issues in the disupute.
Henry Wong is pleased – he’s one of about 1300 workers at Boeing’s Gresham plant.
Henry Wong: “Oh, I feel really good. I feel very optimistic. I hope we go back to work soon.”
Boeing CEO Scott Carson called the agreement: “an outstanding offer that rewards employees for their contribution” and “preserved the company’s ability to compete.”
So far, the strike has shut down production for 53 days and cost Boeing an estimated $2 billion.
