Hispanic Political Organization Issues Voters’ Guide For Latinos
Portland, OR October 16, 2008 2:48 p.m.
A group of activists, farmworkers, and students began mailing out a voters’ guide for Latinos in Oregon Thursday. Pete Springer reports.
The Latino voters’ guide is very simple.
Two sheets of paper, one with candidate recommendations and one with ballot measure recommendations.
Behind the voting guide is Voz Hispana PAC, a political action committee that helps organize Latino voters.
More than two million people are registered to vote in Oregon. About 75,000 of them are Latino, including Brenda Mendoza.
Brenda Mendoza: “I think in the end of it, it’s not just about the Hispanic or Latino community, but it’s the community as a whole. You know, we’re growing, the Latino community is growing really fast and you know it’s important that we’re able to integrate into this, you know, into this system and society here.”
The authors of the Latino voting guide say it’s unlikely they’ll affect the outcome of the presidential or statewide races, but they do hope to make a difference in local races and bond measures.
