Third LNG Site Proposed For Oregon
Portland, OR October 14, 2008 12:10 p.m.
Oregon now has three official proposals to build liquefied natural gas terminals. Rob Manning reports on the most recent one - near Astoria.
Liquefied natural gas critics have generally focused on the Bradwood Landing site on the Columbia River. With good reason - that site is the furthest ahead, having won approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission last month.
Until now, Bradwood’s official competition was with the Jordan Cove project, near Coos Bay. But now, FERC has received a proposal from Oregon LNG to build a terminal closer to the mouth of the Columbia River.
Bradwood and Oregon LNG have already tussled over property rights to that site, and the conflict doesn’t stop there. Bradwood argues that its competition would interfere with the Astoria airport.
Oregon LNG says Bradwood poses greater safety and environmental risks since it's located further inland. FERC has not yet evaluated the Oregon LNG proposal.
All three projects still need state permits.
