DVD Advertisement In The Oregonian Draws Criticism
Portland, OR September 29, 2008 1:26 p.m.
Politicians and leaders of Portland’s faith community are calling for the publisher of The Oregonian, Fred Stickel, to apologize for including what they call an ‘anti-Muslim’ DVD with its Sunday advertising. Kristian Foden-Vencil reports.
The DVD shows images of Islamic terrorists blowing up buildings and shouting ‘death to America.’ It also says America and the mainstream media are in denial about the dangers of radical Muslims.
About 100 people gathered outside The Oregonian’s offices and called for the publisher to create a new policy on what it rates as advertising. State Senator Avel Gordly.
Avel Gordly: “I also want to say to Fred Stickel, and I consider Fred Stickel to be a friend. You’ve made a mistake. There is a place for an apology...and I want to say to all of you, take your DVD and send it back to The Oregonian.”
The paper would not comment on tape, but referred OPB to a story in Sunday’s paper in which Stickel says the principle of free speech is at stake and that he could find no reason to reject the DVD.
