Oregonians Involved In Protests Outside Republican Convention

Inside, Senator John McCain accepted the Republican Party nomination for president. Outside, at least 20 people were detained Thursday as protesters again clashed with police. From St Paul, Ethan Lindsey reports on the protests and the Oregonians involved.

At least a handful of Portland residents were working with protesters in Minnesota.

That includes several so-called “street medics” -- trained in first aid.  They carried water and other materials to help people suffering from tear gas or other injuries.

Police have used physical force and tear gas against thousands of protesters outside the Republican Convention at the Xcel Energy hockey arena in St Paul.

Many of the demonstrators questioned the logic of the violent clashes between protesters and police.

Kat Enyeart says she helped protesters with first aid or by directing them to safe locations.

Kat Enyeart: “I haven't seen anything that I would describe anything as too much. I would describe anger as one of our less productive emotions, but one of our necessary emotions as a step towards more productive and creative endeavors.”

Over 300 people were arrested during the four days of the Republican convention.

Of those, at least 20 have been charged with riot-related felonies.
