A Busy Week Ahead For Northwest Olympians In Beijing

At least a dozen Northwest Olympians have a chance to win medals during the second week of the Beijing Olympics. Correspondent Doug Nadvornick has this rundown.
Among track and field athletes, Seattle’s Aretha Thurmond finished 10th in Monday’s women’s discus final. Tuesday, another thrower, Vancouver’s Kara Patterson, will start her quest for gold in the javelin qualifying.
Wednesday’s a big day as pole vaulter Brad Walker from Spokane Valley will make his first appearance. Former WSU distance star Bernard Lagat and Ian Dobson from Klamath Falls, Oregon will run in the 5000 meter semifinal.
Also on Wednesday, Nicholas Symmonds from Boise will run in the 800 meter qualifier.
In other sports, Hope Solo from Richland was the goalkeeper for America’s 4-2 win over Japan in the today’s women’s soccer semifinal. Solo will be back in the net on Thursday in the final.
The men’s baseball team, featuring Coeur d’Alene’s Matt Brown, beat China today 9-1. It will play Tuesday and Wednesday, trying to get into the medal round.
In women’s track cycling, Bellevue’s Jennie Reed lost in the quarterfinals today. Seattle’s Jill Kintner will start the B-M-X bike competition on Wednesday.
The U.S. water polo team, featuring Portland’s Elsie Windes will play in Tuesday’s semifinal game against Australia.
