Tragedy Shatters Peaceful Summer In Gearhart
Portland, OR August 5, 2008 9:31 a.m.
Residents and vacationers in Gearhart can talk to counselors provided by the Red Cross today. A deadly plane crash Monday morning has rocked the community, as Andrew Theen reports.
The tragedy is difficult to fathom -- five people are dead, including three children. One adult and two more children survived but are in the Oregon Burn Center in Portland. The parents of two of the dead survived because they stepped out for a morning walk.
Federal Aviation Administration officials are investigating why a single-engine plane crashed first into a tree then a vacation home in this quiet town on the Oregon coast.
Daphne Mathew with the Red Cross says they are offering counseling to vacationers, residents and emergency personnel.
Daphne Mathew: "Everybody reacts differently to these sorts of situations, or they just might want to know that the Red Cross is there. But whatever a person needs our mental health professionals are fully trained to respond to all kinds of different disasters."
