Ducks Replace Autzen Scoreboard To Please Fans
Portland, OR July 22, 2008 3:06 p.m.
The University of Oregon's planned new basketball arena has gotten a lot of publicity. But the school is also working on a stadium for its recently resurrected baseball program, and it's expanding the video scoreboard at Autzen Stadium. Andrew Theen reports.
The so-called "Duck Vision" is only 10 years old, but athletic department spokesman Dave Williford says that makes the screen practically unusable.
So the university began work recently to take out the advertising space on the current scoreboard and expand the video screen. It will be over 30 feet high and almost 90 feet long.
Williford said the intent is to please the fans, and he compared it to replacing an old TV.
Dave Williford: "It makes more sense to have something newer and more efficient sometimes than it does to repair the old one, and in this case the old one could not be repaired."
Williford says the school got the money for new scoreboards at Autzen Stadium, and the yet to be constructed basketball and baseball venues as part of a $67 million deal with sports marketing giant IMG.
