More Flights Leaving Eugene Airport, For Good
Portland, OR July 11, 2008 10:15 a.m.
The flurry of flight cancellations continues for smaller airports in Oregon.
U.S. Airways announced Thursday that in addition to canceling two flights from Eugene to Las Vegas, it will no longer fly from Eugene to Phoenix. Those cancellations are effective as of September 1st.
The airline cited high fuel prices as the reason for cancelling the flights.
Cathryn Stephens is a spokeswoman for the Eugene Airport. Stephens said she thinks the flight cancellations are "cyclical" but the airport will feel the sting this year.
Cathryn Stepehns: "We know that by the end of October we will be feeling about a 17.6 percent reduction in service from the year previous. We also know that airports across the country are in the same boat."
Stephens said the overall health of the airport is fine, with service to 5 regional hubs. But she said Phoenix even though isn't a hub, lots of travelers depended on that flight.
The airport hopes to find another carrier to pick up service to Phoenix.
