Portland Hotel Honored For Its Green Accommodations

The Doubletree Hotel, near the Lloyd Center Shopping Center in Portland, isn’t exactly at the center of the ‘live green’ movement.  It was built in the 1960s before anyone was worried about carbon emissions or climate change.

But in 2003, general manager Steve Faulstick realized he was getting more and more visitors who wanted environmental assurances.

The hotel has gone from recycling just 8 percent of its trash to composting 65 percent. It’s also reduced its use of paper by 20 percent, water by 15 percent  and energy consumption by one third.

I asked Faulstick to take me around one room on the 11th floor and explain what’s changed.
