Contents Of Oregon Cannery Safe Revealed
Olympia, WA June 13, 2008 4:02 p.m.
You might remember hearing last month about an old safe that was found in an Oregon Fish Cannery.
A locksmith cracked the code. But the contents of the safe remained a secret. Until now. Correspondent Austin Jenkins reveals the mystery contents.
Was it gold, jewels, cold hard cash? None of the above. So what was in that old safe in Astoria? Drum roll please.
Floyd Holcom: “Canned fish.”
Austin Jenkins: “You’re kidding.”
Floyd Holcom: “Nope”
Austin Jenkins: “So why would somebody put canned fish in a safe?
Floyd Holcom with the J.O. Hanthorn Cannery Foundation has no idea. But he says it was an entire case of canned fish.
Floyd Holcom: “It looks like salmon. We opened one of the cans up and it smells good, it looks edible -- nobody tried it of course.”
Even though the safe is more than a hundred years old, Holcom thinks the canned fish is only twenty or thirty years old.
He says they’ll do some research and try to find out who put the fish in the safe and whether it was a practical joke or there’s some hidden value to what’s in the cans.
You might just say the whole thing is a bit fishy.
