The governor kicked off his “Commuter Challenge” by riding his bike from the governor’s mansion to the state capitol building this Monday.
He wants the 8500 people who work in state government offices in Salem to ride the bus, or bicycle or carpool to work.
Kulongoski says he’ll take part in the challenge as well.
Ted Kulongoski: “When I can, I will leave my car at home, and walk or bike this summer. Like most employees it won’t be every day, but I will be changing my routine whenever possible.”
The governor says changes are necessary to reduce the state’s carbon footprint. But with gas topping $4 a gallon across most of the Northwest, riding the bus or carpooling could attract commuters who want to save money.
