Sheriff Giusto Sets Retirement Date

Multnomah County sheriff Bernie Giusto has announced he'll retire at the end of June. April Baer reports it's the end of an era for a charismatic but controversial figure.

Bernie Giusto's one of the best known figures in local law enforcement. But the last few years of his career he's had to answer a slew of ethical questions -- from his handling of prominent public figures, to the abuse of sick time among his staff.

Also, blistering claims have come to light about his involvement with a sitting governor's wife during the '80s, and whether he covered up that same governor's sexual abuse of a teenager.

Some officials have publicly questioned his moral fitness to serve.

A state committee that oversees the licensing of police officers suggested last week that Giusto should be stripped of his badge.

Guisto's announcement includes only the barest details.

Retired Sheriff Bob Skipper will be sworn in to replace him. He promises a more formal statement later.

Multnomah County Chair Ted Wheeler released a written statement, saying Giusto has chosen to put the interests of  county residents first, but stopped short of saluting Giusto's service.
