Unknown Write-in Wins Oregon GOP Attorney General Race

Oregon Republicans couldn’t find anyone to run for Attorney General this year.  But it turns out that Democratic nominee John Kroger might have a challenger in November after all.  Salem Correspondent Chris Lehman explains.

In the past few weeks some conservative bloggers urged Republicans to write in Ron Saxton’s name for Oregon Attorney General.

Saxton was the GOP nominee in a losing bid for governor in 2006.

State elections officials say about 12,000 people wrote somebody’s name in, but we won’t know who until each county certifies results next month.

Oregon Republican Party spokesperson Brianne Hyder says the party might get behind the write-in winner -- depending on who it is.

Brianne Hyder:  “This is the first step of a grassroots movement.  But of course that movement needs to be paired with a willing and able candidate.”

Saxton could not be reached for comment.

State Elections Director John Lindback says if Ron Saxton is the nominee and declines, that would create a vacancy that the Oregon Republican Party could fill.
