Oregon’s Fifth District Race Gets Another Candidate
Salem, OR March 6, 2008 2:52 p.m.
There are now three Republicans vying to grab Oregon’s Fifth Congressional District seat. Democrat Darlene Hooley is retiring from the post after seven terms.
Dance instructor RJ Wilson and businessman Mike Erickson were joined in the GOP race Thursday by former state Representative Kevin Mannix. Mannix says he’s familiar to Oregon voters after previously running for Governor and Attorney General.
Kevin Mannix: “People know me in this community. There’s a depth of knowledge about me. I’ve been vetted and tested. And I’ve voted hundreds and hundreds of times on issues.”
The Fifth Congressional District spans from the Portland suburbs, through Salem to the Oregon coast. Republicans nationally see it as a chance to pick up a seat in Congress.
On the Democratic side, State Senator Kurt Schrader, political consultant Steve Marks and retired engineer Richard Nathe are all running.
The deadline to file to run in the May primary is next Tuesday.
