Lunar Eclipse On Horizon Tonight If The Clouds Stay Away
Olympia, WA February 20, 2008 10:55 a.m.
The weather forecast is a bit iffy for a sky show Wednesday night. Clouds threaten to obscure the total eclipse of the moon. The eclipse happens in the seven o’clock hour.
Planetarium manager Jim Todd in Portland says refracted sunlight turns the moon a striking shade of red during the eclipse.
Jim Todd: “If you have an opportunity to go out to look at it, you have to look low in the east. It’s going to be underway as the moon is rising above the eastern horizon. It may be clear overhead. Hopefully it will be clear around the horizon as the moon is rising so we can see the effect.”
Todd advises keeping your eyes peeled as well for that wobbly spy satellite the Navy is preparing to shoot down.
It should be visible overhead passing from west to east in the hour before the total eclipse. If weather doesn’t cooperate this time, the next total lunar eclipse happens in December 2010.
