Next Battle In Giusto's 'Fight To Keep Badge' Comes Tuesday

Multnomah County Sheriff Bernie Giusto announced last week that he intends to retire this year.  Tuesday, Giusto may find out if he keeps his badge.  Andrew Theen reports.

Giusto said the stress on his personal life and health were beginning to take its toll.  The sheriff is being investigated on allegations of lying to the public.

He said although he is stepping down later this year, he plans to fight for his badge.

Bernie Giusto: "I am fully engaged in keeping my certification.  My police certification is everything to me."

A subcommittee of the State Department of Public Safety Standards and Training could recommend revoking Giusto's badge at a meeting Tuesday.

Giusto insisted that wasn't his "compelling reason" for retiring.

Bernie Giusto: "I am looking forward to the result, and as I said we'll see what happens when it happens."

The 13-member subcommittee could also vote not to revoke Giusto's certification.  If the panel does recommend pulling the sheriff's badge, the full Public Safety Standards and Training board will take up the issue April 24th.
