Melting Snow Causing More Problems In Detroit
Portland, OR February 8, 2008 noon
Snow has given way to rain in Detroit, Oregon but there’s still plenty of snow on the ground in much of the Santiam Canyon. Pete Springer reports.
Fifteen feet of snow have fallen in Detroit since late December.
There was so much snow that earlier this week, the National Guard was helping shovel sidewalks and areas around buildings.
That snow was then hauled out of town by county and state highway crews.
Now that snow showers have turned into rain, some of snow is starting to melt, causing its own problems, says Detroit city councilor Ed Bowman.
Ed Bowman: “A lot of snow slides off these roofs and if the homes are built down around ground level, we’ve got snow all around the doors and such and the water -- in one house I know of, water is running in their house.”
The main roads in Detroit are clear, though backroads in the upper parts of town remain slushy.
