Sheriff Giusto Announces Retirement Plans
Portland, OR February 8, 2008 8:34 a.m.
Multnomah County Sheriff Bernie Giusto announced Thursday that he will step down by the end of this year. Andrew Theen reports.
Just last week the embattled Sheriff said he wouldn't step down. But now he said he plans to hang around until the Wapato Jail finally opens in September.
Next week Giusto will face the state's Department of Public Safety Standards and Training. He is under fire for allegations of lying to the public. Giusto was asked if that factored into his announcement.
Bernie Giusto: "I'd be dishonest to say it doesn't weigh on the whole thing, but it certainly is not the compelling reason. The compelling reason is when i sit down and I'm quiet in the dark of the night it's time."
Giusto acknowledged that his health has been an issue because of all the scrutiny, saying "it has also been exhausting and has taken its toll on me personally."
Towards the end Giusto got choked up when he talked about the commitment of his employees.
