Dueling Immigration Rallies Greet Lawmakers On Session Opening Day
Salem, OR February 5, 2008 9:14 a.m.
Groups on both sides of the immigration issue rallied at the Oregon capitol Monday.
The pivotal issue is a bill that would prevent an illegal immigrant from getting a driver's license.
Ramon Ramirez of the Oregon Farmworkers Union says the bill is disheartening to many migrant workers.
Ramon Ramirez: “We definitely have an uphill battle here. But you know, one thing, I think at the end of the day, immigrant workers, the Latino community, we’re gonna win.”
A group opposing illegal immigrants was also at the capitol.
Members of Oregonians for Immigration Reform were collecting signatures for an initiative that would go even further than anything before the legislature.
The group wants to give local police departments the power to detain people solely on the basis of not having papers.
